improving black maternal and infant health is critical due to persistent disparities that put black women and their babies at higher risk of death, preterm birth, and low birth weight. black women, in particular, are four times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes in comparison to their white counterparts. these outcomes are driven by systemic racism, biased healthcare, and chronic stress, making timely, high-quality prenatal and postnatal care, along with community-based support, essential to ensuring healthier families and communities.
01: “black women make up 43% of births in philadelphia but 73% of pregnancy-related deaths” (the philadelphia citizen).
02: “philadelphia’s infant mortality rate is nearly 40% higher than the national rate” (children’s hospital of philadelphia).
03: “black women are 4x more likely to die from pregnancy related causes than white women” (city of philadelphia).
04: “80% of maternal deaths can be avoided” (the harvard gazette).

the madro foundation hosts curated events designed to bring communities together while raising essential funds to support our mission. these events not only benefit the foundation’s own programs but also contribute to other organizations and charities aligned with our commitment to improving maternal and infant health outcomes.
